TANGY RIESLING FOR SUMMERTIME SIPPING
Raimund Prum and his wife Pirjo recently visited San Francisco to showcase their Grand Cru family Rieslings from their home in Mosel, Germany. The S.A. Prum family goes back to 1156, making it one of the country’s oldest winemaking dynasties. Today Raimund’s daughter Saskia A. Prum is in charge.
The family estate sits on the banks of the Mosel river in the village of Wehlen. The famous sundial, or Sonnenuhr, was erected here in 1842 by their ancestor Jodocus Prum. Vines here are planted in gray, blue and red slate soils, and are between 80 to 130 years old. No other area in the world has so many old vine ungrafted rootstocks. Vineyards and surrounding countryside are home to reindeer, wild boar and the local moose.
The S.A. Prum wines estate wines are all Grand Cru, or Grosse Lage. Dry wines from historically significant grand crus are called Grosses Gewachs.
Here are the wines presented with a classic Chinese luncheon at Crystal Jade courtesy of Taub Family Selections/Palm Bay International:
