DOG HIKES IN THE VINEYARD AND PANORAMIC VIEWS AT KUNDE WINERY
by Liz Thach, MW
There are not many places in the world where you are invited to go hiking in the vineyards with your dog, but at Kunde Family Winery in Sonoma Valley, California, everyone is welcome. However space is limited because these special hikes with your four-legged companion sell out fast.
“We decided to start the dog hikes because my wife and I love dogs,” explains Jeff Kunde, CEO and 4th generation owner of Kunde Family Winery. “It is a fun event, and part of the proceeds go to the Sonoma County Humane Society and the Dogwood Animal Rescue Project.” He pauses to pat his Australian Sheperd on the back. “And Cooper here really enjoys the exercise.”
The quarterly hike, which begins at 9am and ends at 1pm, begins in the Kunde Family Winery tasting room and then winds through the vineyards up the hill to a stunning panoramic view of Sonoma Valley. Along the way participants get to learn about sustainable farming practices as they watch their dogs frolic in the vineyards.
At the conclusion of the hike, there is a wine tasting and wine country lunch back at the winery. But the most unique aspect is the flavored dog water tasting. While their owners are enjoying delicious Kunde wines, the pet dogs are allowed to sample various types of water, including chicken and beef flavored options.
