ARAGON’S CROWN JEWEL – CARINENA

CarinenaCarinena DOP PanizaParticular

3CCariñena has the distinction of being a town, an appellation and a grape: a tight trio nestled in the Ebro Valley of Aragón midway between Barcelona and Madrid. It became a D.O.P.  (Denominación de Origen Protegida) in 1932 making it one of the oldest officially recognized regions in Spain.

Cariñena is the only region in the world to give its name to a variety of grape, the same grape that is known as Carignan in France. The region has the distinction of having vines that average 40-100 years old.

The region’s three big players in the 32-square-mile area are Bodegas Paniza, Bodegas San Valero and Grandes Vinos y Viñedos. All three produce a wide variety of wines—redolent of red berry, smoked meat and baking spices—that over deliver both for the price and their food-friendly pairing ability.

In a blend or on its own, Cariñena is a varietal gaining popularity from its namesake region. All three wineries offer great single-varietal selections that express the unique characters that Cariñena grown in Cariñena exhibits.
